The Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) has introduced the “Okanagan Climate Indicators Dashboard,” a new tool designed to monitor climate changes in the Okanagan Valley over the past century. This dashboard provides detailed data on temperature trends, precipitation patterns, streamflows, and lake inflows, aiming to inform local policymakers and residents about the region’s evolving climate. The goal is to encourage proactive steps towards creating a more climate-resilient and sustainable community.
During a demonstration to local officials and media, project lead Sandra Schira highlighted a significant shift towards a warmer and drier climate over the last 30 years. While seasonal variability still exists, the overall patterns have become more pronounced. OBWB Executive Director Anna Warwick Sears emphasized the importance of understanding these changes for effective water management. With less snowpack in winter and earlier spring melts, water utilities need to manage supplies carefully to meet agricultural, domestic, and ecosystem needs.
OBWB Chair Blair Ireland noted that this information is crucial for farmers to adapt their crops to warmer and longer growing seasons. Local governments can also use this data to plan for hotter communities by planting trees for shade and establishing cooling centers for vulnerable populations.
Sandra Schira encouraged individuals to engage with the issue in ways that matter to them, whether through gardening, teaching, or other community activities. The dashboard also provides resources for residents, educators, and local governments to help them prepare for and adapt to the changing climate.
