Burnaby Charges Ahead on Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

The City of Burnaby is making it easier for residents with electric vehicles to stay “charged up,” unveiling 14 electric vehicle charging stalls at six locations across the community, with more to come.

“Burnaby residents have told us they want more charging capacity in our city. This is a great start towards delivering on that goal,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “We will continue to add more EV stalls as quickly as we can as we look to become a carbon-neutral city by 2050.”

EV charging is now available at the following city facilities:

4 stalls at Edmonds Community Centre
2 stalls at McGill Library
2 stalls at City Hall
2 stalls at Bill Copeland Sports Centre
2 stalls at Central Park Tennis Courts *coming early March*
2 stalls at Riverway Golf Course

EV charging at all City-owned stalls operates on a pay-per-charge basis:
$2 per hour, 6 am to 10 pm daily
$1 per hour, 10 pm to 6 am daily
Plus applicable parking meter rates
Four hour maximum, to encourage turnover

Staff will monitor the use of the City’s new charging stations for insights into the most effective ways to expand electric vehicle infrastructure through 2020.

In September 2019, the City of Burnaby adopted ambitious carbon reduction targets in line with the International Panel on Climate Change. Encouraging the use of electric vehicles in our community will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and noise.

A total of 50 per cent of all carbon emissions in Burnaby comes from transportation. To that end, we have introduced requirements that all new residential development include EV charging. As a result, 100 per cent of new residential parking stalls are EV-ready.
